Plants, Pollinators, and Why We Need Each Other

Many of us enjoy the beauty of flowers in our backyard and community gardens. Growing native & pollinizing plants adds beauty and important habitats for wildlife, especially for pollinators. Even a small backyard garden can make a big difference.

Important fact: birds, bats, bees, butterflies, beetles, and small mammals that pollinate plants are responsible for bringing us one out of every three bites of food. They also sustain our ecosystems and renew our natural resources by helping plants reproduce.

So… we decided we should create a place for pollinators here at Gill’s. Our goal is to keep learning more to be better stewards & create a beautiful space to enjoy nature.

Here’s what Gill’s landscape designer Phillip Elbert came up with:  a flagstone patio and seating wall surrounded by beds full of the best plants for attracting pollinators! Gill landscape crews installed the entire new landscape and garden center staff helped with the plantings – a real team effort:

Here’s a list of the plants we planted in our pollinator garden – come see them as they grow and bloom:

  • Passion Vine
  • Henry Duelberg Salvia
  • Bidens Blazing Embers
  • Lantana
  • Uptick Coreopsis
  • Mexican Bush Salvia
  • Rock Rose
  • Mexican Flame Vine
  • Copper Canyon Daisy
  • Sizzle & Spice Coreopsis
  • Turks Cap
  • Gregg’s Mist Flower
  • Blackfoot Daisy
  • Mystic Spire Salvia
  • Shrimp Plant
  • Butterfly Weed
  • Mexican Honeysuckle
  • Jerusalem Sage
