Now is an excellent time to plant a veggie garden – now as in Spring and now as in Spring 2020. We’re talking peas, beans, peppers, squash, pumpkin, radish, and more. Check out our list of Spring planting dates here.
Here are some pro tips for 3 of our favorite veggies to grow at home.
To get the most peppers, give them at least 6 hours of sun. Fertilize with a good organic when you plant and a few times during the growing season. Then scale back on fertilizer once the peppers start to form. BTW, you CAN plant sweet peppers next to hot peppers, one will not affect the other’s flavor… they can also last multiple seasons in our mild climate.
2. Green Beans
They sprout, grow and produce quick. Pole types are fun for kids and give a great harvest. Think Jack and the Beanstalk. It’s best to stagger your seed plantings by 5-10 days so they are not all ready to pick at the same time. 6 hours of sun and fertile well drained soil will give you a great harvest.
Give them something to climb on so the fruit is not laying on the ground. Cucumbers are heavy feeders, be sure to work some organic fertilizer into the soil when planting. Once you see the fruit forming, check them often. You’ll be amazed at how fast they grow. Some varieties get huge, but they taste better when picked average size.
