We’re gearing up for spring with some very special Garden Talks & Events in February and March! Here’s a preview of what we’ve got planned – starting with James Gill’s annual Get Ready for Spring talk on February 8th! Stay tuned here and on our social media pages for more details as we approach each event. Mark your calendars and read more about each event below: 

Saturday, February 8th – 10am – Get Ready for Spring with James Gill

Join us here at Gill’s on Saturday, February 8th at 10am for James Gill’s ‘Get Ready for Spring’ garden talk. James will go over proper pruning techniques, what to plant, how to fertilize, watering tips, and lots more. James is a walking encyclopedia of local gardening and landscaping knowledge – bring your questions! Free and open to everyone!

Saturday, February 15th – 10am AND 2pm – Tomato Kickoff with Andy Chidester of Medina Agricultural Products

Did you know that the tomato is the most-grown vegetable in the world! We’re so lucky we get 2 seasons to grow them in South TX! Come join us at Gill’s to kick off the spring tomato planting season. Andy with Medina Ag will give 2 tomato planting/growing demo sessions at 10am and again at 2pm, plus she’ll be here to answer questions and give away samples and prizes throughout the day. Free and open to everyone!

Thursday, February 20th – 6pm – Houseplant Cutting Arrangement Workshop with Ori Roldan

Join Gill’s houseplant expert, Ori Roldan for a fun evening learning how to take cuttings from mother houseplants and start your own babies! Use our mother plants or bring your own. You’ll learn how to propagate and leave the workshop with your own beautiful cuttings growing in a glass container with LECA (lightweight expanded clay aggregate). Workshop limited to 25 guests – $20 each – click here to reserve your spot. Drinks and light snacks provided. 

Saturday, February 22nd – 10am – Start Your Spring Veggie Garden with Wyatt Page, TCNP

February is time to get your spring veggies going! We’ll be stocked with all your fav spring veggies and probably some you’ve never tried before. Join Wyatt Page, Gill’s Asst. Manager and Texas Certified Nursery Professional for an informative talk about how to plan and start your veggie garden. Wyatt is an avid veggie gardener – he’ll show you how to get big production and beautiful veggies to eat and share! Free and open to everyone. 

Saturday, March 1st – 10am – Support the Bees with The Coastal Bend Beekeepers Association

 

Join the Coastal Bend Beekeepers Association at Gill’s for an engaging presentation on the vital role bees play in our environment. Learn how these incredible pollinators support local ecosystems, agriculture, and biodiversity. We’ll also share essential tips for beginner beekeepers, including how to get started and best practices for responsible beekeeping. Whether you’re a gardening enthusiast, nature lover, or aspiring beekeeper, this session will provide valuable insights and practical guidance!

Thursday, March 13th – 6pm – Grow Your Own Gourmet Mushrooms with Elemental Farm

Come explore the science of mycology as you learn to grow your own mushrooms at home with Cody & Kim, owners of Elemental Farm, a regenerative organic farm located in Sinton, TX where they specialize in gourmet mushrooms! Spend an hour learning all about the growth cycle of mushrooms, the incredible health benefits and nutrients they can provide to your body as well as your garden, while you follow along with the step by step process of growing your own mushrooms using Elemental Farm’s mushroom box grow kits! You’ll leave with your own mushroom grow kit to take home. Choose from Blue Oyster, Pink Oyster, Lion’s Mane, or Reishi varieties! Thursday, March 20th  – Cenizo Garden Drawing Club Returns!

Are you into plants? Do you like to draw? Then come draw plants with us at Gill’s! Our Cenizo Garden Drawing Club welcomes art and plant enthusiasts to an open & friendly gardening community to practice their drawing skills and get to know the plants around them. Join us as we share gardening tips and draw specific plants or gardening still lifes. No drawing experience? No problem! We welcome all levels. Each session is led by a professional artist to help your progress if you choose. This will be a semi-regular free event limited to 20 people each session. RSVP here!
