Matt’s Video Guide to Planting Potatoes

Ixora (Matt)

It’s January…you know what that means…time to plant your potatoes! Check out Matt’s quick video guide – he’s our seasoned potato pro here at Gill’s. Growing potatoes is such a fun project for kids – and big kids too. The same principles apply if you’re growing potatoes in the ground, but we prefer Matt’s layered container method for bigger harvests! Watch below!

Thanks Matt for a very informative video. I have always wondered what was the time to plant potatoes – and now I know.😊

Thank you for the video. So, my question is “do you use regular cut-up potatoes you buy from the store?” I thought that you couldn’t use those because they use a chemical on them to keep them from sprouting.

Hi Suzy – you are correct. Most potatoes from the grocery store won’t sprout. You will need to purchase what we call seed potatoes, which we have in stock for $5.99 for a 3lb bag. We’ve red Pontiac and white Kennebec available.

Hi Naomi – great question. That depends a lot on proper care and planting and weather, but you could expect anywhere from about 2-10 potatoes from each cutting. One of our 3lb bags contains about 8-12 seed potatoes, which can be cut into 2-4 pieces each. So, if you planted a full bag, you could expect anywhere from about 30 to potentially over 100 potatoes. Sunlight is a big factor too – they’ll need lots of sun!
