I love my Katrina Iris! It’s always in bloom…always! I planted it about 4 years ago and it has quadrupled in size or more. It gets full hot west sun all year long in a sometimes wet, sometimes dry flower bed. The flowers are creamy white with hints of gold and glow at night like tiny lanterns. They are tough and elegant! No bugs, no disease, just a family of lizards that call it home!

When you begin seeing June bugs flying around the porch light, you wait 5-6 weeks and then treat with Bayer Season Long Grub Control Granules. If you have not fertilized the lawn yet, you can spread Gill Lawn and Garden Fertilizer, then the Bayer Grub Granules and water them both in at the same time. Season long for this product means maximum 3 months, so a follow-up application may be necessary by mid July. Also note, these granules do not bother earthworms!

They are bigger than most pots but easier than working in the dirt and can be placed anywhere in your garden, preferably with half a day of sun or more for food crops. Our troughs are galvanized, originally designed for storing water for livestock; they are tough! EASY, EASY, EASY!!

Texas Sage eaten by caterpillars? Take a close look at your Texas sage and see if you find small black spiny caterpillars.
Although they are small they have a huge appetite for sage leaves. They can devour the leaves of your plant in a matter of days. They are easily killed with Thuricide, Dipel dust or Spinosad and your plants will leaf back out in no time.

Monday night I had the pleasure of viewing the newly completed Caribbean Journey Exhibit. I am proud of what the Texas State Aquarium brings to our community and to be a partner in the construction of a facility that educates our youth about an ecosystem unlike our own and the value of its preservation.
The Caribbean Journey interior landscape is the most unique and challenging installation of my career. From achieving the ideal soil mix to plant maintenance in hard to reach areas, this project required research, critical thinking and team work. The “dream team” featured: Fulton Construction, Texas State Aquarium project representatives, world class designers and Gill’s.

I knew this landscape would be home to birds, sloths, lizards and other critters. It would be natural, not polished and clipped. The mulch would be natural leaf litter. I’m thrilled to see plants typical of the Caribbean such as ‘Shady Lady’ Olives that love nice, moist soil and quickly drop all their leaves if they go dry. It’s a real treat to see orchids and bromeliads growing on palms and trees- their natural homes. And I must admit the request to plant a dead tree was a first for me!
In my opinion, this is a world class exhibit. Check it out!”

The best time to water is early in the morning so they are well hydrated going through the heat of the day.
Nutrients are leached out faster in the hot months since we water more. When we have a stressed plant that has either stopped blooming or has lost its color in the leaves we add Super Thrive to our fertilizer. It is a vitamin additive that helps to give your plant vigor to make it healthy again.
What are Mycorrhizae? “ Mycor”and “Rhiza” literally means “fungus” and “root” and defines the mutually beneficial relationship between the plant and root fungus, sold as “Bio-tone, Plant-tone & Soil Moist Transplant Formula“. These specialized fungi colonize plant roots and extend far into the soil.
Mycorrhizal Fungal filaments in the soil are extensions of root systems and are more effective in nutrient and water absorption than the roots themselves. In other words, they grow off the roots making a massive root system which allows the plants to take up water and nutrients much faster and more efficiently. The bigger the root system, the less water the plant requires. Watering less often in the summer sounds like a good thing to me.

With all the recent rains, mosquitoes are here.
First of all, remove any sources of standing water (that’s where they breed). For your favorite birdbath, use Mosquito Bits in the shaker, for larger ponds or ditches, Mosquito Dunks, both totally safe for birds and frogs.
We have several ways to kill, control and repel them. Mosquito Beater hose-end (Permethrin) is an easy spray to kill mosquitoes, ants, fleas & tics throughout the yard. It is safe to spray on all plants where mosquitoes hide.
